Graphene Glass: All You Need to Know

Just like clothes, shoes, and infrastructures, glass plays a significant purpose in our lives. Recently, there has been an emergence of graphene glass as a promising material because of its excellent properties. Integrating graphene will provide electrical/thermal conductivity and surface hydrophobicity while retaining the regular transparency of glass.

Graphene as A Solution to Glass Corrosion

At the Centre for Multidimensional Carbon Materials (CMCM), within the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), researchers demonstrated the feasibility of graphene as a coating for glass and as a solution for corrosion.  Glass has chemical and corrosion resistance that begins on the glass surface when there is water absorption. As the hydrogen ions from water disperse, there is an exchange of sodium ions from the glass surface.

As the pH of the water close to the glass surface rises, the silicate structure dissolves.

Researchers transferred atom-thick layers of graphene onto both sides of rectangular samples of glass and made an evaluation using water immersion tests, which lasted for 120 days. The results revealed an increase in surface roughness and deformity, as well as a decrease in strength. On the other hand, both the fracture strength and surface roughness of the single- and double-layer graphene-coated glasses remained unchanged.

Glass is one of the most groundbreaking technologies on the planet, with its remarkable flexibility and unique technological capabilities, glass is responsible for various cultural and scientific advances. .

Technology Behind Graphene

Graphene is known as the thinnest material in the world, having a thickness of only one atom. Each atom connects itself to three molecules, forming a hexagonal structure. Its lightness can allow a significant reduction in the weight of products when applying graphene. Despite its light and thin material, it is still 200 times stronger than steel.  Its power comes with great flexibility, offering better endurance from vertical pressure. However, what makes graphene an excellent material for coating and paint is its impermeability, which is not letting substances pass through its layer.

Applying Graphene in Coating

Graphene reduces heat on the outside paint so that water is substantially less likely to stay when contrasted with artistic coatings. Ceramic coatings hold heat, so any water that remains will turn into a water spot, which draws into the covering and then to your paint.

glass application

Due to its honeycomb design and compound properties, graphene has an extreme water contact point compared to most coatings, meaning any dampness will slide off easily.

Graphene can also provide a solution to the build up of dust on vehicles. As a result of its  electrical and warm conductivity properties, graphene can fight against static which will prevent dust and other miniature particles.

Takeaway

As graphene is demonstrated to be the thinnest, most grounded material on the planet, it is the best option for protecting surfaces against atoms. It also has the traits of being impenetrable from several liquids, gases, and other corrosive substances.

However, its quality properties provide flexibility and versatility, meaning it can do s much more.
